The Secret of Joy in Work

“The secret of joy in work is contained in one word – excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.”–Pearl Buck

Setting aside the possibly Orwellian overtones that can be read into that quote, there is a great satisfaction to be gathered from a job well done. In modern society there is far too much emphasis on outputs, the value of a thing being its cash value and the money to be made at the end. We also seem to eschew the concept of incremental progress; if we don’t “get it” immediately, if we can’t manage to be excellent right off the bat, we’re tempted to just walk away. We don’t look at work in the same way we should look at life, as a journey, with joy to be found in incremental progress and the opportunity to make ourselves a little bit better every day.
