Dreams, Wishes, and Goals

“Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream while others are wishing.”–William Arthur Ward

With apologies to Disney, a dream is not a wish your heart makes. I’ve jokingly said that the difference between a wish and a dream is buying the lottery ticket rather than just talking about what you’d do with the winnings. A wish is hoping that something will happen to you without having to take action; a dream defines something you actually want to do. The problem is that neither of them gets you there.

If I hit the lottery I’d pay off some bills, buy a house, get a new car, travel, do some great things for causes I care about. We all have dreams along those lines. Well, instead of dreaming about those things, why not actually set out to accomplish them? What’s standing in your wait? Why not turn them into goals, laying out the steps you need to take to achieve them, and setting some benchmarks and deadlines? Find the actions and let the dreams be the light at the end.
