Geek Love and Birthday RPGs

Katie and I had a lot of fun for her birthday yesterday. I made her pumpkin pancakes for breakfast. I made the dinner she requested — my premium meatloaf, mashed cauliflower, and roasted green beans. We had tiramisu cupcakes for dessert. We watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on TV and wondered how we always forget, from year to year, how much bullying and sexism the special is infused with. We built a gingerbread house. We acted silly and just had a relaxed, low-key day.

My favorite moment was when she unwrapped her present. I wrote her a tabletop roleplaying game. She had been bouncing ideas off of my for a while, about a game she wished existed, and things she’d like to see in an RPG.So I wrote a first draft, printed it out, put it in a presentation folio, and gift wrapped it. She loved it. I watched as she sat and read it, and giggled. She was crying a bit at the end, and gave me a huge hug. She reacted the way some women act when they’re given diamonds. I love my geek wife.

My goal now is to finish the game for Christmas — yes, it’s a a double-duty present. I asked what she wanted to do with it, whether she wanted to keep it to herself. She decided we should release it through Asparagus Jumpsuit. So, it’ll be the first release of the New Year.
