The daily affirmations that I’ve begun posting are inspired by a book called 365 Tao by Deng Ming-Dao. I feel like I’ve owned the book forever. It was first published in 1992, and judging by the yellowing of my copy’s pages and snippets of memory bouncing around inside my head, I bought it not too long after that. I’ve used it at least three or four times for daily study, so coming back to it is like revisiting and old friend. Through various moves, downsizings and purges, it’s one of the few books that I can’t be parted from.
What’s great about the meditations in the book is that they are so universal that they can speak to what’s going on in your life right now, regardless of your religious beliefs, spiritual path, or religious tradition. They’re so broad that every time I come back and use it again, my life has changed so that I get something completely different from each meditation.
This time around, I’m not so much delving into the Tao Te Ching as I am using as as a word-of-the-day writing prompt. My spiritual brother Gary E. Weller, who begin doing precisely that at his blog and suggested that I jump on the bandwagon and do the same. It’s been a fun ride so far, and I want to keep it up for a whole year.
You can purchase your own copy of 365 Tao at Amazon. Use this link and a tiny cut of the purchase will go toward supporting this site and my work here, while not costing you anything extra!
