During the month of August, I’m participating in RPG a Day 2017. Each day I’ll answer a question, or my interpretation of a question, about tabletop roleplaying games. For those who have wanted your beloved UncleBear to get back into RPG blogging, this is the closest you’re going to get. This is Day 1 #RPGaDay 2017.
What published RPG do you wish you were playing right now?
I wish that I were playing in something using the Lighthouse Roleplaying System right now. Not playtesting it as the designer. Not running it as the guide. I’d like to be able to participate as a player, to get a feel for how it plays from that perspective. That might seem like a self-serving answer, like Kayne saying he regrets that he can’t ever see Kanye in concert, but I’d like the first-hand experience. I’d also just like the chance to be a player, not just a gamemaster, for a change. I wrote the thing based on how I like to game as a player, after all.
My Group Wants Dungeons & Dragons
Right now I’m the dungeon master for a 5e game, and I’m enjoying it. With the exception of my wife Katie, the other players are new to roleplaying. That’s how I ended up as the DM. If I had a preference, there are at least half a dozen other games that I would have picked to run, but they wanted an authentic, brand-name D&D experience and I’m more than happy to provide that for them. Published, official adventures, and rules-as-written with none of my usual penchant for house rules.
As a Player, a Superhero Game
As a player, I’d like to be in a supers campaign again. Mutants & Masterminds, probably, because I like the elegance of it. Something very Silver Age and Four Color in tone. Classic Legion of Super-Heroes or wacky Curt swan-era Superman in terms of silliness. Batman ‘66 campiness would work for me, too. As far from real-world grimdark n-punk as possible.
Check Them Out
If you want to see what Lighthouse is about, the core rules are cheap. It’s the engine for all of the roleplaying games I’m going to be publishing going forward. If you haven’t checked out 5th Edition D&D yet, I recommend the Starter Set. Pick up the Mutants & Masterminds Deluxe Hero’s Handbook for a great superhero roleplaying experience.
