There are only so many hours in a day, and we all have things that we need to do. There are things that we want to do, but never seem to find the time. I know that I have a tendency to put my own needs at the bottom of the list, and settle for whatever scraps I can get. This is a terrible habit, and one of the reasons I ended up crashing and burning a month ago. As part of my plan to remedy this, I’m embarking on 31 days of self-care.
For the month of May I’m setting myself a small challenge. Every day I’m going to engage in some intentional act of self-care. The aim is to do something just for myself every day. I will schedule the time, and treat it as an important task on par with anything else going on that day. Then I’m going to write a short blog post about what I did, the effect it had, and hopefully the cumulative impact this has over the course of the month.
Today, for example, I woke up an hour earlier than usual. I took a shower, meditated, sat outside for a bit. The birds were singing, the neighbors were quiet, and it was pleasant just to have some stillness before my normal routine kicked in. I don’t know that I’ll do this every day, but today it was a treat.
This challenge is leveraging one of my own worst habits, turning it to positive ends. If I set a goal to write a short daily post about something I’ve done for myself, then I will need to do something for myself. It’s a dastardly way to get myself to slow down and enjoy life a little more, but it seems like it’ll work. Come with me, and we’ll find out together.
