Yesterday would have been my grandmother’s 103rd birthday. She was always tickled that she was born on 7/7, and I think it would have amused her that even here in Europe, where we put the day before the month, she’d still be 7/7.
This month, for one hour per day, I take a break and watch a TV show that’s just for me. That means it’s something Katie’s not interested in, or is excessively violent. Peaky Blinders is my current jam. I described it to someone as a cross between Downton Abbey and Sons of Anarchy, which I think is at once completely off the mark and right on the nose. A lavish period piece set after World War I, about a band of criminals who follow their own code.
My current food obsession is okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake that’s sometimes referred to as Japanese pizza. It is decidedly not a healthy choice, being pub food, although it does have a lot of cabbage in it to offset the fact that it’s fried. I’ve been experimenting with making it a couple of times per week. During the summer I don’t want to turn on the oven, and only want things that are quick and easy to make. Salads, fresh fruit, and sandwiches are great, but I also love to cook. Like an omelet or a frittata, you can throw just about anything into it. It’s a great way to get rid of leftovers.
Tomorrow is my weekly spa day. I’m going to be soaking my feet in a combination of sea salt and baking soda. There’s a coconut oil sugar scrub I’ve been wanting to try, because my beard prevents me from using masks. I’m also going to be painting my nails, with a clear polish that strengthens them. As I get older my nails have a tendency to break more often, even though I take a calcium supplement.
