Happiness is a Choice

Happiness is a choice – not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you.

The Finnish heat wave was supposed to be over by this point, but now they’re saying it will continue for at least the next two weeks. It’s killing my productivity, because it’s causing my arthritis to flair up. I’m still working, but at a slower pace. I’ve pushed back a couple of new releases. Fortunately, the Christmas in July sale and the bundle deals are carrying my through. I am grateful that the business is at the point where I can coast on passive income when I need to.

Still, when you consider that it hit 106 Fahrenheit (41 Celsius) in Japan, where over 70 people have died and reportedly around 10,000 people are suffering from heat stroke, I can’t complain. The Japanese Meteorological Agency is calling it a natural disaster. So the next time you meet a climate change denier, punch them really, really hard. Not because you hold them accountable for all of the people dying, but because the heat has made you incredibly irritable. Or, you know, be happy that the rest of the world is moving forward with the Paris Accords and other common-sense measures to address climate change.

Stores here are still sold out of fans. I almost wish that I had bought a few extras when we snagged ours. I could have flipped them for a sizable profit on the burgeoning black market (Please note: I am joking). There are classified ads where people are begging to buy or borrow a fan. We continue to be grateful that we got ours when we did. I don’t know that I’d be at all functional without them.

The Dine-and-Dash Bandit has been caught in Helsinki, so that long national nightmare is finally over. A culturally refined, well-dressed man ate fine meals in at least 8 restaurants, then disappeared without paying the check. This is the crime blotter during summertime in Finland. I live in a place where this — not mass shootings, police brutality, and abject stupidity — at the top headlines.

Nothing is stressing me out right now, and that’s amazing. Rather than focusing on what might happen, or what’s happening elsewhere, I’m trying to be present and appreciate today for what it is. I’m taking every opportunity to be outside that I can, because before you know it we’ll be back into the Long Dark and I won’t want to go out. I’m trying to enjoy life knowing that all of this could go away at any moment, for reasons I can’t even begin to anticipate. With all of the uncertainty in the world right now, let the people in your life know that you care about them every moment of every day. Sleep in, eat well, use the good dishes, and enjoy the little things right in front of you.
