An Open Letter: 21 April 2019

This is your weekly open letter from me, Berin Kinsman. It’s not technically a newsletter, but it’s a little bit different from a normal blog post. I publish one of these every Sunday at around 3pm EST.

An Open Letter: 21 April 2019

It’s Easter! In Finland, that means it’s a 4-day weekend. Good Friday and Easter Monday are national holidays. There may be a few stores and restaurants open, but we don’t take any chances. Our first year here were were surprised that everything shuts down on holidays. We tried to go grocery shopping once on Mother’s Day, and all of the stores were closed.

So we did all of the grocery shopping and errands on Thursday, and have dug in until at least Tuesday. Katie’s making art. In addition to working (see below) and cooking (see my Instagram) I’m using the time to prepare some easy meals for the coming week. The fridge will be packed with stuff that’s easy to reheat or can be eaten cold. That’s going to become part of my weekend routine, starting now. Then I can get into a flow state Monday through Friday and not have to spend as much time on meal prep.

What’s Going On with the Blog

It’s been a while since I wrote about my Big Hairy Audacious Goal. The reason I’ve been mostly “radio silent” for the past week, and will be blogging a lot less for the foreseeable future, is that I’m giving over most of my time and energy to that goal. In addition to the day-to-day operation of my business and my efforts to expand it, I’m deep into rewriting the business plan. I need to have that in order so I can register as a Finnish business, and apply for residence as a self-employed person.

Updating the business plan has made me think a lot about what I do, how I do it, and why I do it. There will be action plans that spin off of it, to help me with product development, marketing, and other areas. That, in turn, has made me think about what I’m doing in this space. It’s not part of the business, and I don’t want it to be. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t needed to sit down, figure out what I want to do with this blog, and make a plan. Things have been going seat-of-the-pants for too long.

Which means this blog will continue to be on semi-hiatus for a while. I’m going to keep writing these weekly Open Letters on Sunday, but probably nothing in between. There won’t be a major relaunch or anything like that. I like the state of the site as it is, in broad stroke. What I need is to find a clear vision, a stronger sense of purpose, and a functional production schedule before I try to move things forward again.

Spiritual Practice

The fact that I continue to meditate, read, and study the Dharma is what keeps me going. I get incredibly stressed out in the period right before and during our immigration status renewal. Throwing myself into work has always been my go-to distraction, but that’s not always constructive. Along with getting enough sleep, eating better, and general self-care, my practice has helped tremendously.

This also feeds into what I want to do with this blog going forward. I’ve been thinking about what I want to write about here. Ways that this can be part of my practice, useful things that can share, and what sort of approach I want to take. I want this space to be fun, and different, but also informative. I have ideas. And I promise that it’s not going to be all-Buddhist, all the time, and remain more generically useful.

Thanks and Gratitude

Even though I’m writing this mainly for my own purposes, it means a lot to have people make the effort to read it and leave comments. Thank you.
