When Did You First Start Setting Writing Goals?

During a period of unemployment I found myself freelancing to pay the bills. There were no jobs, or I was under-qualified, or frustratingly overqualified. I’d always puttered around with writing, but never seriously. When rent and groceries were on the line, I decided that I needed to start setting writing goals if I was going to survive.

When I set the goal to pursue writing professionally, I chose to go back to college for a business degree rather than an MFA. I felt that there were myriad ways to learn how to write well, but few that would help me to manage a successful career. That’s where I learned how to set bigger goals, and to be better at goal-setting.

Since moving to Finland, writing is my only career option. I do not speak the language fluently, I do not have a degree from a Finnish university, and I do not possess any special skills that are in high demand. That meant that I had to invent my own job and take my writing career to a whole other level. That’s when I began to set some high-stakes writing goals. There is no Plan B. I have to make a living at this.

The Merry Writer is a writer’s game on Twitter run by Ari Meghlen (@arimeghlen) and Rachel Poli (@RPoli3). Each day there’s a new question, and each month there’s a new theme. In these posts I expand upon the answers that I’ve posted on my Twitter.
